TOP 10 TOOLS 2008
Heather Ross

Heather Ross is an instructional designer in Saskatchewan, Canada. Her rantings about education and community can be found at www.mctoonish.com/blog.

Heather's Top 10 Tools as at 9 January 2008

  1. Blogbridge - A free desktop RSS reader that integrates very well with del.icio.us. I know that most people these days prefer portability, so Google Reader would be best for that, but I think BlogBridge has a better interface and it picks up new feeds faster than Google Reader.

  2. Google Docs - Great for collaborating with colleagues or for creating docs that you may need to access from anywhere.

  3. Google Search - THE search engine.

  4. iTunes - Great source for audio book and free podcasts / vodcasts.

  5. Jing - Free tool for creating screencasts. I've used it to create tutorials that are then saved on Screencast.com. It's very easy to use.

  6. Twitter - I've called this IM on speed. I didn't get it at first (who cares if you're eating breakfast and then brushing your teeth), but I've found it a great way to stay in touch with my network and get answers to questions on the fly. Talk about just-in-time learning.

  7. Wetpaint - Free wiki space. Wetpaint recently announced that if you're a teacher using your wiki with students (K-12 and post-secondary) you can have the ads removed for free. I also prefer the navigational structure and options available.

  8. Wikipedia - I look up things in the ultimate of encyclopedias several times per week. Amazing example of a community coming together to make the world a better place.

  9. Wordpress - Best blogging platform out there. I use Scribefire (PC) and Qumana (Mac) to write and add my posts.

  10. YouTube - Yes, there are a lot of annoying videos, but there are also some excellent educational resources.
