How to use Twitter for Social Learning
Micro-Learning on Twitter
Last updated: 22 August 2010

Wikipedia defines micro-learning as follows:

"Microlearning deals with relatively small learning units and short-term learning activities."

So essentially, we are referring to creating small chunks of learning content and short learning activities, e.g.

  • reading a short piece of text - blog posting, article etc
  • listening to a short piece of audio, e.g. a podcast
  • watching a short video
  • taking a short quiz
  • tweets

Micro-learning example

Here is an examples of micro-learning content:

140 University

One-off, stand-alone micro-learning content, that contains all relevant information/instruction

140 University delivers daily "classes" to build your general knowledge and education via Twitter,  Facebook and Google Buzz.. It consists of a knowledge nugget that contains a link to a supporting and explanatory resource.  Classes are available in a number of "departments", including Art, Astronomy, Chemistry, Media Studies Music, Physics, Technology.  Learning can be fun!  (On Summer vacation July-September 2010)

Twitter with its 140 character limitation is perfect for delivering short bites of learning content - and for creating a community of learners around that content.

The 140 University example has been created as follows:

  1. A separate Twitter account was set up for this activity to send out the tweets to followers

  2. An example tweet from the 140 University Twitter account looks like this.

Each class/tweet consists of a

  1. a fact - an engaging statement that will entice the learner to click through to the link (a "teaser")

  2. a link - the link will be a supporting short resource - a web page, image  video, podcast.  The link is shortened to ensure there is maximum amount of room for the teaser.  (See Sharing links and resources)

  1. Comments from followers are re-tweeted, as too classes that are shared.

  2. Tweets can also be scheduled in advance. There are a number of tools to do this, See Managing multiple accounts: Scheduling tweets.

  3. Saturday is quiz day at the 140 University.  We ask a question.  Followers tweet their answers.  The following day we provide the answer and say who tweeted it first correctly
