What is Elgg?

Elgg is a FREE, open source social engine to create social environments.  It is more than just social networking but includes social bookmarking, blogging, wikis, RSS feeds, micro-blogging and more - all in one platform.

Elgg allows individuals to create, organise and manage their own personal resources and contacts using a variety of social media tools, as well as work with others - co-creating and sharing content and resources - in groups.

Why Elgg?

Too many different social media tools in use are causing confusion amongst users! Although some people can cope with large number of tools; others are overwhelmed by all this.

Using Elgg in organisations means, :

  • you don't have to rely on cobbling together a mish-mash of stand-alone social media tools
  • you don't have to worry about the security and privacy of data held outside of the organisation
  • you can provide a seamless environment where members can use a range of social media tools

As Elgg supports the creation of a number of different groups to which members can belong, it is most appropriate where the emphasis is on collaborative working and social learning. It can therefore be used in the following ways

  • Organisational - internal
    • an organisational intranet that supports collaborative working across the organisation
    • an organisational social learning platform for both formal and informal learning
      • academic - schools, colleges and universities
      • employee
  • Organisational - external
    • social learning platform for external programmes
    • project/customer/client network
  • Professional social networking
  • Hobby/Interest social networking
