TOP 10 TOOLS 2008
Judy O'Connell

Judy O’Connell

In 2008 I took up the post of Head of Library & Information Services at St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill in Sydney Australia. I'm a keen user of Web 2.0 tools, which supplement my daily use of ICT to work, laugh and play online. I am passionate in my search to discover how best to work in a multimodal environment with my students, so that they can experience a creative and productive edge to their learning in an online world - their world and their future. I have been blogging at Heyjude  since 2006, and continue to be excited by emerging technologies, innovation with Web 2.0, and what this all means for schools and school libraries. I also have the pleasure of regularly being able to work as a learning technology consultant on diverse projects.

Judy's Top 10 Tools as at 30 March 2008

  1. Firefox - my favourite browser for a long time now, and so trustworthy across platforms.

  2. Wordpress - though I have used many others, this remains my favourite blogging platform.

  3. Del.ici.ous - how did we survive without social bookmarking? I use this every day, and love the ease with which I can share information with people in my network.

  4. Flickr - another tool I can't live without. The ability to store, share and edit my images on Flickr makes it a core tool and essential for all my work.

  5. Wikispaces - The collaborative function of wikispaces remains vital. Though it is not the 'prettiest' wiki tool, it's so enmeshed in K-12 education that I can't function without it, whether for the Horizon Project, or for small class projects - wikispaces is there in so many places.

  6. Twitter - has become my fastest and most essential micro-blogging communication tool.

  7. Second Life - networking in the metaverse has never been so good. This is an essential tool for learning for me and is becoming an important tool for learning for my students too.

  8. Bloglines - my trusty Feed Reader - where would I be without it? The original and still with me after all this time, making it a favourite still.

  9. SnagIt - with all the Web 2.0 tools around, I still enjoy using SnagIT to do a whole host of jobs for me. I load Snagit onto every single machine I own.

  10. MS Word - Under everything I do are the many word documents that I write. Never think of using anything else - so it makes it a favourite, even if by default. What are your Top 10 Tools for learning?
