TOP TOOLS 2009
Leia Fee

I’m a work based learning tutor and NVQ assessor, working for Swansea ITeC in South Wales, I mostly teach ICT, along with Key Skills and Adult Literacy and Numeracy. These are my Top Ten...  It was an interesting exercise! I found the first half a dozen easy peasy, stuff I use every day, but the last couple more difficult picking out the best of what I use less often. I have tried to go for stuff I use the most rather than stuff which looks spangly and brill but which I haven't found a use for yet!

Leia's Top 10 Tools as at 30 July 2009

  1. Wordpress - We use the self-hosted version for the company blog and dozens of Wordpress.Com ones for learners. Great for encouraging reflections on their learning.
  2. Moodle - Only recently started getting material up on this but can already see potential. Great for being able to mark work all in one place!
  3. Slideshare - PowerPoints from presentations always available and can be embedded into blogs and Moodle.
  4. Bubbl - Online mindmapping. Use both with learners and for CPD planning
  5. Ript - Great tool to create a virtual "scrapbook" of Internet research
  6. Google Maps - Always popular in numeracy sessions, great motivator. Also use for "combining information" in Key Skills ICT projects.
  7. Google Docs - Collaborative working. Use both with learners and staff
  8. ScreenToaster - Screen recorder, useful for training. Would like to encourage learners to sue it themselves to record software techniques they struggle to remember.
  9. Creative Commons- great sources of copyright-friendly media
  10. Wordle - Word clouds. Nice for topic starters.
