TOP 10 TOOLS 2007
Lisa M Lane

Lisa is an online and history instructor at MiraCosta College in California, as well as head of the Program for Online Teaching there.

Lisa's Top 10 Tools as at 7 August 2007

  1. FeedRaider - All the RSS feeds I read appear on one page or tabbed pages, with as many or as few headlines as I want, in any order I want, and I just run my cursor over to get a preview of each one. Couldn't keep up without it!

  2. GraphicConverter - For Mac, quick to load and resizes and sharpens quickly, exporting to jpg, gif or whatever I want.

  3. Moodle - My current Course Management System (and probably my last), Moodle has an intuitive interface and enough web 2.0 features to keep me happy for now.

  4. QuickTime Pro - I'm still adding subtitles the hard way, and each version of QTPro makes it easier. Plus it's the fastest way to edit video and reduce file sizes for video and audio

  5. Grab - Built into Mac OS X, it captures screenshots and selections jiffy quick.

  6. Eudora - Yes, I use Thunderbird for some stuff, but Eudora is still my workhorse for email. Easy to organize, fast to load, easy to get into the files and change things around, clearing out old material. I know, I gotta move on.

  7. Adium - Mac IM integration that lets me open both my personal and work accounts at the same time, even though they're with the same service. And I like the quack when someone signs in.

  8. TextEdit - Part of OS X and super fast, it's just enough word processor for simple tasks and can save as plain text for coding.

  9. Firefox - the best browser around, except when it isn't and I have to use...

  10. Safari - just to check things when Firefox can't, and make sure web pages or images are behaving themselves
