TOP 10 TOOLS 2007
Mike Alcock

Mike Alcock is the Managing Director of Atlantic Link Limited, a supplier of rapid e-learning software.

Mike's Top 10 Tools as at 12 July 2007

  1. iGoogle - my personalised desktop and the first thing that opens on my laptop. A customised homepage with my favourite feeds including e-learning news, world clock, currency converter, Formula 1 news, BBC news, BBC sports and everything else I need to be up to date with the world. Plus the best search engine from my home page.

  2. MSN Messenger - still my favourite way to communicate, especially with my developers in Kiev, as well as family and friends. Fast, free and 100% reliable.

  3. Skype - free calls to Kiev and the rest of the world. Low cost calls to landlines and mobiles around the world. Saves me a fortune.

  4. Internet Explorer - still the best way to get around the Internet and reliably connect to every website out there.

  5. Turbine Video Encoder 3 - - convert any video format to Flash in seconds - very handy.

  6. Bearshare - the easiest way to share files on the Internet, and a valuable source of content.

  7. Paint - I'm no graphic designer and Photoshop is way beyond me, but if I need to edit a picture or create a graphic I can get by with Paint. The results may not be masterpieces, but they usually suffice and are good enough for almost all of my on-line activities. Simple, easy to use and free with Windows.

  8. StatCounter - a free tool for tracking hits on your website. Great statistics and graphs, and sometimes even company names for visitors. A great marketing tool and very reassuring when you want to know that your website is not being ignored.

  9. Google Docs - Collaborate across companies and organisations. The future of application software.

  10. Content Point - I know that this is my own software, but I can't imagine creating e-learning courses any other way. I won't blow my own trumpet too much here, but once you've authored remotely, there's really no going back. A Google spreadsheet for e-learning.
