TOP 10 TOOLS 2008
Stylianos Mystakidis

I am based in the University of Patras, Greece where I develop e-learning courses for the university community in the field of facilities management. Our university is currently running eclass LMS based on claroline.  Furthermore, I am vice director of studies in IEK Vergi, private college (). There we deploy a full asynchronous e-learning support of all courses. Moreover, I subscribe to the open source notion of education. As a result of this, I've setup and run www.iedu.gr, an open e-learning community for e-learning course builders & providers. Also, I am a certified instructor at the National Centre for Public Administration and Local Government, where I teach among others in "train the e-trainer" seminars.  my edublog will appear shortly on blog.edu.gr.

Stylianos's Top 10 Tools as at 1 February 2008

  1. Google Reader - Effective, free tool for rss feeds. My personalised news kiosk.

  2. Moodle - One of the best overall platforms for asynchronous e-learning. Free, open-source with great add-ons developed in a global community. Backbone of most of my e-learning projects.

  3. YouTube Catcher - Invaluable tool for keeping off-line copies of videos. Particulary useful in teaching instances where internet connection is unavailable or problematic.

  4. dotsub.com - Very useful tool for a country such as Greece. Adding subtitles to videos makes them understandable to a much broader audience. A must when a video is intended for high school students for example. Also useful for foreign language learning students.

  5. Slideshare - The idea of sharing in life is not just superb, it is a pointer to the solution of many problems in all levels. Identifying the existential importance of our relations within societies helps us overcome individualism and develop our humanity.  Slideshare as a tool is a perfect example of technology-driven enabler in global scale. Moreover, slideshare is a source of great material, thanks to their open-minded contributors. I've spent hours discovering fascinating presentations in various subjects.

  6. Wikispaces - Available power of wiki-freedom. Use it wisely!

  7. Del.icio.us - Information fishing stick (or rather net?) in the internet ocean. Very efficient and simple social bookmarking tool with a must-have firefox plug-in.

  8. Elluminate - Stable, efficient, feature rich web-conferencing tool for business. I'd love to have the interface in my local language though.

  9. Skype - Serious phone alternative + IM tool + collaboration add-ons = efficiency

  10. Wordpress - One of the best free, open-source blog platform choices.
