SOCIAL LEARNING ONLINE WORKSHOP
A practical online workshop on how to use social media
for formal and informal
workplace learning
This Workshop takes a practical look at the key
social media tools and how they can be used for learning. It
assumes no knowledge, experience or skills with any of the tools, so
starts from first principles, but also covers their application for
both formal and informal learning purposes.
Programme
Part /Week 1 - Getting started and
communicating with others
- Social networking - getting started, using a social network informally
and formally; profiling, making contacts
- Working and learning with others - joining a group to
work/learning formally or informally with others, tagging content
- Communication tools: Synchronous and asynchronous communications, discussion,
chat, messaging, live meetings, etc
Part/Week 2 -
Sharing and collaborating with others
- File sharing - uploading and sharing files, embedding
shareable resources in web pages
- Collaboration tools - wikis and other collaboration tools
Part /Week 3 - Personal Tools
- Social bookmarking - storing and sharing online
bookmarks
- Micro-blogging - using public and private Twitter-like services
Part/Week 4: Personal Tools

- Blogging - blogging formally and informally in the
workplace
- RSS feeds - keeping track of news and blog feeds
Part/Week 5
- Setting up a collaborative workspace for formal/informal learning purposes -
putting it altogether, creating and maintaining informal and formal groups
Part/Week 6
Social Learning project - identify a
learning or performance problem and implement a social learning
solution to address the problem.
Technology
Although this online workshop will be hosted in our own private, integrated social media platform
- SLOE (Social
Learning Online Events) - it will also refer to and consider other
publically available stand-alone social media tools.
Content and facilitation
All the content will be online and will include
readings, activities, discussions and other interactivities and
collaborative tasks.
A facilitator will be available online for general support through
the programme, and to provide feedback on the project.
Event fee:
INTRODUCTORY INDIVIDUAL RATE - £95 + VAT per
person
Event availability
The Wokshop is available EITHER on-demand,
i.e. you can join up at any time and work in your own
time and at your on pace on it, OR else work with others on a 6-weekly
basis. You can join the workshop any time from 7
September 2009. All participants will work in the same group
space to ensure they benefit from all the comments and activity
within the workshop.
