Comments from those who selected Elgg as one of their Top 10 Tools in 2009
- we have just set up our new collaboration platform using Elgg – cost effective, and I’m getting addicted to it – we are using it for networking, blogging, bookmarking – and it’ll probably take over some of the other tools I’ve mentioned above Stephanie Horden
- it has been really exciting over the past few months to be developing and piloting Elgg within UEL. We feel it enhances the sense of community across the university and opens up new avenues for collaboration, sharing and communicating. Although early days yet, it has been enthusiastically received by users on the pilot. We are still learning how best to use it to enhance the learning experience with students and have been able to adapt to use by a wide range of types of groups in the pilot. Blogs, wikis, video, podcasts, RSS feeds , social networking tools, discussions forums, bookmarking etc etc – and all in one place! The permissioning system is one of the best features of elgg and allows you to determine a range of access settings which is ideal for a university. Sarah Frame
- “We started experimenting with Elgg last december. It looks very promising as a network of personal learning environments but we had some issues. We expect to continue as soon as version 1.5 comes available.” Herman Post
- It is Elgg that has become the key tool for me in the last few months. I have used it to set up C4LPT.Net (a Social Learning Network for professionals), as well as for a number of clients, and we are now offering a range of Elgg consultancy services. Jane Hart

- “This is my blogging community, filled with my peers. I started blogging there when it was Elgg, and have created Community Blogs there for classes because even early on my students could add audio files as well as discuss readings there.” Joan Vinall-Cox
- “Elgg – Everything you need to build your own, open-source, open-standards Facebook competitor, and getting better all the time” Scott Wilson

- “My main blog is at eduspaces and I work on two projects that are powered by elgg – another great piece of OSS.” Frances Bell
- “My main tool to develop social networks and informal learning communities. It is a good foundation to build your own Personal Learning Environment (PLE), and also an e-portfolio. It provides a blog, file sharing and a feed reader (rss/atom). It is good also to develop e-learning 2.0 strategies. I have 2 blogs on Elgg (English and Spanish ones). EduSpaces is a good international social network on education built on Elgg I am involved with.” David Delgado
